Your first pair of skis, built with a fairly narrow waist (66mm) to make carving easier.  Torsionally these skis will be just stiff enough to carve consistently at slower to moderate speeds on intermediate terrain.  If you are a more aggressive skier or more athletic, you will be better than these skis in a very short time!  Better to buy something with the future in mind.  If you plan on spending 95% of your day learning to carve on groomed trails this is the ski you are looking for.

You need one ski to do it all here in the East.  Good at everything the mountain can throw at you.  You want a ski that can crank it up in a race course but still be fun in the new snow.  The 70mm waist gives you an incredible edge on hard Eastern snow, yet is still wide enough to float when you get in the crud.  This category of skis has been the most popular over the past few years due to their incredible versatility.  Many skiers who used to buy race skis just to get that high performance feel have switched to this category.  Your day consists of 75% on the font side hard snow and 25% in search of what ever else is out there – bumps, crud, glades, gates, terrain park.

The new “big boys” 80+mm underfoot, but with real side cuts.  If you come to the mountain every day looking for new snow or whatever is left over in the woods, these are your toys. You learned how to carve a shape ski a long time ago and know if you really need this baby to carve.  You just lay it out there a little farther.  This probably is not your only pair of skis, but the ones you want to “play on”.  Remarkably, new generation constructions allow this ski to really carve when needed.  Keep the length down – your stability comes from width, not length.  Life is good when you spend 75% of your time in the soft snow and 25% on the groomers.

The true “go anywhere - do anything” skis on the hill today.  You spend most of your winter here in the East but a trip West is always in the planning.  Once considered wide with a 74 +/-mm waist, these new generations of mid fats carve like a dream and yet give you a big comfort zone in the mash potatoes and crud.  Truly the ski to step up to from a recreational ski if you see yourself getting better really fast, or if your athletic ability warrants going to a better ski right from the get go!  You love the whole mountain – spending half your day on the front side groomers and the other half on the backside stuff is your idea of heaven.
