Front-side Carvers

Traditionally, a ski for the beginner skier, but now recognized as a category for the skier who readily admits that they like the groomers and will not be exploring the rest of the mountain. Ski waist widths range from 68-74mm. torsionally; these skis will be stiff enough to carve consistently at lower to moderate speeds on intermediate terrain. If you are a more aggressive or athletic skier, you may want to consider a ski that will push you to the next level….but if you are comfortable with your ability and plan on spending 95% of your day on the front side groomers this is the ski for you.

You need one ski to do it all here in the east. Good at every thing the mountain can throw at you. You want a ski that can crank it up in the race course, but still be fun in the new snow. New geometries allow these 80 + \-mm under foot skis incredible edge hold on hard eastern snow, yet are wide enough to float when you get in the crud. This category of skis has been growing over the past few years due to their range of versatility. Many skiers, who used to buy race skis just to get the performance, have switched to this category. Your day consists of 75% on the front side hard snow and 25% in search of bumps, crud, glades, gates, Terrain Park…what ever else the mountain has to offer.

These new “big boys” are 90 mm+\- under foot, but with real side cuts. If you come to the mountain every day looking for new snow or what ever is left in the woods, these are your toys. You learned how to carve a shaped ski a long time ago, and recognize that in order to carve this ski you only need to lay it out there a little farther. Remarkably, new generation constructions, and the new wide ride bindings, really let these babies carve. Probably not your only pair of skis, but the ones you love to play on.  Length is creeping back into this category, especially if you have another ski in your quiver.  Life is good, spending 75% of your day on the backside and 25% on the front side.

The true “go anywhere do anything” ski on the hill today. You spend most of your season here in the east, but a trip west is always in the planning. Once considered wide with their 74+\- mm waist, this next generation mid fat, carve like a dream, yet give you a big comfort zone when you hit the crud or mashed potatoes. This is the ski to buy instead of a Front side carver if you see yourself getting better really fast, or your athletic ability warrants it. You love the whole mountain….spending half your day on the front side groomers, and the other half on the backside is your idea of heaven.

Planning on spending most of the day in the park or pipe? This is the category that offers the biggest fun factor. There is a wider version of these skis that the western guys like for the obvious reasons, but keeping the waist width down allows these skis to carve it up when you are not in the park. Most of these skis have two different mounting points, one for spins and tricks and one for a more traditional carving feel.  These skis are “sick” in the bumps… the turned up tail doesn’t hook up in the trough and because they are a little softer, you can pivot your turn instead of carving it when you want to.

As you might expect, these skis are very specific to what they do. They are almost a separate company within their own companies. Unless you want a “one trick pony”, there are better options for a great day on the mountain. That said, these skis do what they are supposed to do. FIS dictates side cut dimensions, lengths, and plate heights. These skis are constructed with all the newest technology and  all the best materials…thus the price tag. Not for the weak of heart,( or leg), be prepared for the ride of you life.
